Think of an especially active, hands-on orchestra conductor who shuns the podium, roams the orchestra pit, and urges principle musicians from diverse ensembles to play together and realize the score. That’s roughly what happens during stem cell development, except the conductor is a single “master” growth factor receptor, the orchestra pit is the nucleus, the principal musicians and instrumental ensembles are promoters and transcription factors, and the score is, well, ontogenesis itself.

During evolution and development of a species, the replication of the organism’s genome can lead to a duplication of certain genes that evolve new functions. Scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) report that two different mouse models of breast cancer progressed differently based on characteristics of the tumor microenvironment, which is the area of tissue in which the tumor is embedded. The team published its study (“Presence of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Proteins Correlates With Tumor-Promoting Effects of Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 in Breast Cancer”) in Neoplasia.
